What to Expect at a Charity Golf Tournament

October 8, 2026

Your first tournament can be relaxed, welcoming, and meaningful when you know how the day works.

What to Expect at a Charity Golf Tournament

You have signed up—or are considering signing up—for your first charity golf event and want to know how the day will work. This guide explains what to expect at a charity golf tournament, from check-in and scramble rules to clothing, meals and options for non-golfers.

At a Warrior Companion event, your participation helps fund veterinary care for service animals belonging to disabled veterans and first responders. You do not need a low handicap or tournament experience: follow the event details, arrive prepared and be ready to support the cause.

The Flow of the Day: Registration, Tee-Off and the 18-Hole Timeline

Your event listing is the best source for exact arrival and tee times because schedules vary by location and format. Warrior Companion holds traditional scrambles as well as shorter events such as the nine-hole “Nine, Dine and Music” fundraiser. Check the current Warrior Golf event details before making travel plans.

On arrival, go to the registration area rather than heading straight to the first tee. The check-in team will confirm your name or foursome and provide the day’s instructions. Arrive within the published registration window so you have time to unload your clubs, meet your teammates, collect your cart as directed and hear any course rules.

Many charity events use a shotgun start. Instead of every team waiting at the first hole, groups are assigned different holes and begin at the same time. Listen for announcements about your starting position and when carts may leave for the course.

Allow roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours for a full 18-hole round, although field size, weather and course conditions can change that estimate. If your registration includes a meal or community program after play, account for that time rather than planning to leave when you submit your scorecard.

Depending on the tournament, Warrior Companion golfer registration can include tournament entry, a shared golf cart and scheduled meals such as breakfast, lunch or dinner. Read the specific listing before registering because times and inclusions differ between events.

How Charity Golf Tournament Scrambles Work

Scramble play removes much of the pressure new golfers feel. Each person on the team hits a tee shot, the team chooses the best result and everyone plays the next shot from that area. The process continues until the ball is holed, with one team score recorded for each hole.

Warrior Companion uses inclusive, team-based formats so experienced golfers and beginners can contribute together. One player might supply a strong drive while another makes the important putt. A poor shot does not have to define the hole because the team can select another ball.

Some Warrior Companion events use a Florida Scramble, also called a step-aside format. After the team selects a shot, the player who hit it sits out the next stroke. The other players hit, the team chooses the next ball and the rotation continues.

Keep pace by being ready when it is your turn, taking the club you expect to use and picking up balls the team will not select. Harper College recommends “ready golf,” in which players prepare and hit when it is safe instead of following slower, honor-based rotations.

Place your ball near the chosen shot according to the event instructions without improving the type of lie. If the selected ball is in the rough or a bunker, the other shots normally remain in that condition. The tournament briefing takes priority, so ask an official if you are unsure about placement, scoring or a maximum score for a hole.

What to Wear and Pack in Your Bag

Course dress rules differ, so check the venue’s policy before the event. A collared golf shirt with golf trousers or course-appropriate shorts is a safe choice at many clubs. Wear soft-spiked golf shoes or comfortable spikeless shoes with good grip, and avoid metal spikes unless the course expressly allows them.

Pack for several hours outdoors rather than only for the forecast at tee time. Useful items include:

  • Golf clubs, balls, tees, a glove and a small towel
  • A ball marker and pitch-mark repair tool
  • Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses
  • A refillable water bottle and any personal snacks allowed by the course
  • A light rain layer or extra clothing if conditions may change

Label your bag and valuables, and keep your phone quiet during shots and announcements. On the green, repair pitch marks, avoid walking across another player’s putting line and stand still while someone addresses the ball.

Non-Golfer Options: Dinner, Live Music and General Admission

You can support a Warrior Companion event without playing. Where offered, General Admission provides access to listed activities such as the community dinner and live music. A General Admission + Golf option adds tournament play.

This works well when one person in a group wants to golf while a spouse, friend or colleague prefers the social program. It also gives individual supporters and corporate guests a way to meet the community and learn about the mission without bringing clubs.

Follow the access and arrival instructions in your ticket confirmation rather than assuming every ticket covers every part of the venue. The event listing will explain when and where the non-golfer program begins.

Activities differ by tournament. When dinner and live entertainment are included, arrive at the stated admission time. If you are organizing a company group, confirm golfer and non-golfer numbers before buying tickets so everyone receives the correct registration type.

The Cause on the Course: Where Your Participation Makes an Impact

Warrior Companion is a Texas-based nonprofit, and net tournament proceeds help offset routine and emergency veterinary expenses for service animals belonging to disabled veterans and first responders. The organization focuses on handlers facing financial hardship, including disabled veterans whose service animals do not qualify for VA coverage.

Federal support does not cover every veteran or service animal. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs explains that its veterinary health insurance benefit has specific eligibility, prescription, disability and training-organization requirements. When a handler does not meet those requirements, routine care or unexpected treatment can become a serious financial burden.

Tournament support can help address preventive needs such as examinations and vaccinations, along with urgent treatment for injuries or illness. You can read more about why VA coverage gaps exist and how veterinary financial aid supports veterans.

You can participate as a golfer or non-golfer, organize a company group or donate directly. Each option turns community support into practical veterinary assistance for working service animals.
